Welcome to IELTS Writing
Two tasks. Two very different jobs.
The IELTS Writing test gives you 60 minutes to complete two tasks. Task 1 asks you to describe visual information. Task 2 asks you to write a discursive essay. Each is scored separately and then averaged, with Task 2 carrying twice the weight of Task 1.
Many candidates lose marks not because their English is weak, but because they don’t fully understand what each task is actually asking them to produce. Task 1 is a report, not an essay. Task 2 is an argument, not a summary.
This section will teach you the structure, language and strategy needed for both tasks, along with how each is assessed against the official band descriptors.
Understand the test
How does the IELTS Writing test work?
Both tasks are completed in a single 60-minute session, with no break in between. Managing your time across both tasks is one of the most important skills you’ll develop in this section.
Time Limit
60 Minutes
Both tasks share a single 60-minute session. There is no separate time allowance for each task — managing your own time is part of the test.
Recommended: 20 minutes
Task 1
You describe, summarise or explain visual information such as a chart, graph, table, map or process diagram in at least 150 words.
Recommended: 40 minutes
Task 2
You write a discursive essay responding to a point of view, argument or problem in at least 250 words.
Results
Weighted Band Score
Task 2 counts for roughly twice the weight of Task 1 when your overall Writing band score is calculated.
Plan your time wisely
Task 2 is worth more — budget your time accordingly.
Because Task 2 carries greater weight, running out of time on Task 1 and rushing Task 2 is one of the most costly mistakes a candidate can make. Practising the recommended 20/40-minute split is essential.
